This story takes me back in vivid colors to a time, (times?) all ready gone, when it was still possible to keep a romance going that was already gone, with
false promises of Halloween fun. It' s terrific story
neon with lost innocence and reminds me of those past
times when I kept hoping even though my heart was already broken. Kudos, Karen! Terrific story for
a funn(ha-ha!) Valentine. BTW, do you know where
David is now?

A supersaturated noir, the brittle 'come here go away', the long slow roller coaster of ambition and unevenly paired romance . . . delicious.

The language ~ detail accumulates, crisp quick specific images leave trails like the glittering light popping off sparklers. The narrative is loaded with the hyper sensual awareness prompted by everyday city life. Slick and brightly colored, crisp crunchy words from the mouth of a heart's detective who sorts out exactly how it didn't work.

Fantastic.

Thanks, Dirty! I'll bet David would have lots to say about "her." And I did try to write the story in a way that called some subtle and not so subtle bullshit on the female protagonist, who has her own wildly misguided (or destructive) notions and motivations, while she tries to pin all the blame on David. I find this in itself to be a fascinating relationship dynamic, when one or both parties are insisting they're blameless. Or even, that someone (the other) needs to be blamed.

damn, this story is full of fantastic language and insight. it does make me wonder, though, what the character "david" might have written about the narrator. a whole other set of ambivalent pros and cons. thanks for taking us back to that oasis of a new york city halloween.
